Dining in Manhattan: Asiadog

Posted in Brunch, Dinner, Lunch, Restaurants with tags , , , , , , , , on August 29, 2011 by quiksilverpronyguide

Ever find yourself craving a delicious, juicy, grilled organic (chicken, beef or veggie) hot dog topped with, say, kimchi or Asian sesame slaw?  Or Japanese curry with kimchi apples?  Or spicy ketchup, jalapeño mustard, and crushed salt and pepper potato chips? (Can you tell we’re hungry?) Asiadog’s got you covered.  Started in the back yard of a friend’s bar, Asiadog has expanded to locations that include the Brooklyn Flea, Central Park’s Summerstage, Terminal 5, and pretty much any in-the-know event.  They even opened their own shop on the border of Chinatown, and it’s the perfect place to grab a bite whilst kicking around Nolita or Soho.

Dining in Manhattan: Rubirosa

Forget about the neighborhood’s over-hyped Lombardi’s and go for the best thin-crust pizza in Nolita at Rubirosa, the restaurant bringing the Little Italy back to Nolita.  Operated by the son of Giuseppe Pappalardo of Joe & Pat’s, Rubirosa not only makes a mean pie, but also a baked ziti that’ll have you on a carb high all night.  Tip: try the Pra Soave Classico wine if they have it.

Dining in Manhattan: ABC Kitchen

You don’t need to be down with the great Alsatian chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten (he of Spice Market, The Mark, and Mercer Kitchen) to enjoy ABC Kitchen.  So named because it’s located inside ABC Carpet & Home (one of the best, most pricey home wares stores in the city), this could be the healthiest meal you’ll have while visiting.  Try the crab toast, sweet pea soup, and ricotta ravioli.  Tip: the wait can be super long, but they do accept reservations.  Call now.  We mean it.

Local tips: Food trucks

Posted in Dinner, Food, Local tips, Lunch with tags , , , , , , on July 29, 2011 by quiksilverpronyguide

Food trucks are a phenomenon in NYC – and we’re not talking about the kind of food trucks that sell dirty-water hotdogs, stale pretzels, or meat of questionable origin.  We’re talking baked falafel, homemade lobster rolls, Korean BBQ and new-fangled Mexican.  These are just a few of our favorites in Manhattan.  Locations vary, so check their websites or Twitter accounts for the most up-to-date information.

Calexico – We credit this muy authentico Calixican food truck with starting the good-food mobile craze.  Two words:  crack sauce.  Order it.  @CalexicoNYC

Eddie’s Pizza – Thin crust goodness.  @EddiesPizzaNY

Korilla – Korean barebeque…and burritos with kim chi!  @KorillaBBQ

Luke’s Lobster – Loster rolls.  And they take credit cards.  Enough said.  @LukesLobsterNY

Mexicue – Mexican cuisine meets down home, barbecue goodness.  @Mexicue

Schnitzel & Things – Like the name says.  All kinds of schnitzel and things like Austrian potato salad.  @schnitznthings

Taim Mobile – Baked vegetarian/vegan falafel and insane date smoothies.  @TaimMobile

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream – Earl Grey, Ginger, Mint Chip…all made with natural ingredients.  @VLAIC

Wafels & Dinges – Sweet and savory waffles!  @waffletruck

Dining in Manhattan: Supper

From the Frank’s/Little Frankie’s empire comes Supper – another locals-only spot we hate to divulge, but we’re doing it anyway ‘cause we like you.  Supper, as its name implies, is down-home, affordable Italian just like mama used to make.  Sometimes they have burrata or grilled calamari with hot peppers – if they do, those are must-haves.  Otherwise, try the Tagliatelle or Osso Bucco (Sundays only).  Local tip: Supper is cash only.

Dining in Manhattan: Peels

Peel’s brand of Southern food is authentic North Carolina Low Country, with the best shrimp & grits, ham biscuits, and fried chicken ever.  But don’t fret, vegetarian friends, you can order your biscuit without ham and try out the flavorful quinoa salad. Do not even think of leaving without ordering the Monkey Bread for dessert (which usually sells out around lunch time).
