Surf & Skate Spots: brought to you by Indoek

Our new friends Matt and Drew over at Indoek put together their own awesome guide to the Quiksilver Pro NY called Bro In The City.  They were cool enough to share their picks for surf and skate spots in Manhattan, Jersey, and Long Island.  Read on…

SURF

Rockaway 90th St. (Queens)

Only a 45 minute subway ride on the A train from the city.

Lido Beach (Long Island/Long Beach)

Just a little further east of the main event.

Gilgo Beach (Long Island)

Just east of Jones Beach, gilgo is a beautiful little state park with some nice peaks rolling in.

Montauk (East Long Island)

If you’ve got a full day or weekend to kill, arguably some of the best waves in New York are about a 3 hour train ride away to the end of Long Island.

Sandy Hook (New Jersey)

Big SE swell?  No car?  Grab a 30 minute ferry from Manhattan and hope for NW/W winds.

Fort Tilden Beach (NY)

Rent a bike and escape the city.  Just over 30 minutes from Brooklyn and it’s a state park so the beach is nice(ish).

SKATE

Pier 62 Skate Park (Chelsea, Manhattan)

Skatepark on the westside at the piers.

House of Vans (Greenpoint, Brooklyn)

Vans state-of-the-art skate warehouse facility.

Shopping in NYC: Brooklyn round-up

Posted in Brooklyn, Shopping with tags , , , , , , , , on August 29, 2011 by quiksilverpronyguide

So we gave you the Manhattan round-up – now it’s time for Brooklyn, where the vibe is way more laid back.  If you know the right places, you’re more likely to get edged out by the neighborhood grannie who really wants some catnip soap from Kill Devil Hill than the hipster who’s desperate for the $100 vintage G n’R tee.

A vintage lover’s dream store.  (Men’s and women’s)

Brooklyn Flea

This is, hands-down, one of the best flea markets in the world.  Bold claim, yes – so why don’t you get on over there and try to refute it yourself? Make sure to grab a strawberry basil popsicle from People’s Pops, a beer making kit from Brooklyn Brew Shop, or some Portobello jerky from King’s County Jerky.

Every Saturday:

176 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn (Ft. Greene)

Every Sunday:

East River waterfront, between N. 6th and N. 7th, Brooklyn (Williamsburg)

Bird

Not cheap, but worth it.  (Men’s and women’s)

Goose Barnacle

If you ever secretly wanted to be James Spader as Steff in Pretty In Pink, now’s your chance to ride the east coast prep wave all the way home. (Men’s)

91 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn (Brooklyn Heights)

718-855-2694

Kill Devil Hill

Want something rusty or dead?  Our favorite Antique store Kill Devil Hill’s got it.  Treat your significant other to a pound of deer antlers or a bolo tie or catnip soap.  Irresistable.

170 Franklin Street, Brooklyn (Greenpoint)

347-534-3088

Mollusk Surf Shop

We’d like to draw your attention to a special event that Mollusk is having: the Board Exchange, on September 17th and 18th.  Bring in your used board ready to sell and receive 100% store credit.  Great selections from their end of summer sale, too. (Men’s and women’s)

210 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn (Williamsburg)

718.218.7456

Odd Twin

You’ll always pay more for vintage in NYC, but Odd Twin gets it close to the way it’s supposed to be, with an amazing selection spanning the past seventy years.  (Men’s and women’s)

Drinking in Brooklyn: Saint Vitus

Posted in Bars/nightlife, Brooklyn, Local tips with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 10, 2011 by quiksilverpronyguide

As the name implies, Saint Vitus is a straight-up metal bar with live bands, Kill ‘Em All metal karaoke, and a weekly hardcore night.  $3 buns (cheese steak, sausage, bbq tofu and more) sop up booze specials like the Pope: a Coors Banquet tall boy and shot of Tullamore Dew with a Brooklyn Brine pickleback.  If we could live here, we would.  All hail Saint Vitus.

Saint Vitus Bar

1120 Manhattan Avenue (Greenpoint, Brooklyn)
